Monson Academy

Monson, Massachusetts

Founded 1804, formally opened in 1806

Drawing of Academy Building

  • Although associated with the Congregational Church, it had no formal religious affiliation
  • The hope was that it would attract students from all over the state
  • It would also serve as the secondary school for the town
  • It soon was known all over the world

Memories of "Old Monson" have begun to fade with the passage of generations and in no instance is this more conspicuous than in the case of Monson Academy. The Academy's distinguished presence in Monson spanned almost 170 years and its students, both men and women, reached the highest rungs of achievement, accompanied by their great contributions to society. Thus, it was desirable, and indeed fitting, to assemble memoirs by living authors regarding their experiences in growing up in Monson and at Monson Academy in order to provide a substrate upon which current readers can ponder and derive lessons applicable to today. In con-junction with the present sampling of reminiscences, various historical texts are included that give a glimpse of the challenges and victories of past generations as they strove to furnish the youth of their era with the best possible preparation.

It is hoped that the present collection of essays will stimulate others to do likewise for later inclusion on these pages and, as a consequence, offer lessons that will be beneficial to future generations, as they, too, strive to realize their own aspirations.
